KCWLA History

Started in the late '70s by the few women practicing in Bakersfield at the time, KCWLA was incorporated in 1981 by Suellen Anderson. Its first President was Sharon Mettler, although she had to step down when Gov. Brown selected her as the first woman appointed judge in Kern County. KCWLA was instrumental in development of gender bias guidelines for the Kern County Courts. The association also actively promotes legal education through scholarships awarded to deserving law students through its Kern County Women Lawyers Foundation. The association is also integrally involved in the local community and adopts a local charity each month for its monthly service projects. KCWLA's monthly service projects have included such wonderful organizations as CASA of Kern County, Dress for Success Bakersfield, The Bakersfield Homeless Center, and Hearts Connection.
